What the Los Angeles Kings need to do this summer

The Los Angeles Kings’ 2023-24 season ended Thursday with a 4-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, as Edmonton closed out the series 4-1, eliminating the Kings for the third consecutive season. Los Angeles is now left wondering what’s next in the offseason.

General manager Rob Blake must decide if interim head coach Jim Hiller is the right man for the job, or if the club will look elsewhere for a new bench boss. With veteran players like Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty, will the team look to add more pieces and take another shot at the playoffs? Or will the team start to move on from its more expensive players like Pierre-Luc Dubois and start a rebuild?

On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the deciding game of the Kings-Oilers series, and what’s next for hockey’s team from Hollywood.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Where do the Kings go from here? They have $20 million in cap space, do you go get a goalie and try to add another impact piece?

Frank Seravalli: No I think you have some real fundamental questions. I think they’ve had some significant roster construction and asset-management mistakes. The Pierre-Luc Dubois trade and subsequent contract looms large, as he seems to be a non-competitive player for them. He was only noticeable in bad ways and now has seven years left on his deal.

This is a guy who you have to consider buying out. More than that, what about the rest of the team? How do you put yourself in the upper-echelon that Edmonton and the Vegas Golden Knights, and now the Vancouver Canucks, that’s a significant issue for this team. Everything should be on the table, not just finding a new head coach, but reexamining their management.
