Andersen, Ingram, and Kylington named 2024 Bill Masterton Trophy Finalists

Carolina Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen, Arizona Coyotes goalie Connor Ingram and Calgary Flames defenseman Oliver Kylington were named finalists for the 2024 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The Masterton Trophy is awarded “to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” The local chapters of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) submitted nominations for the Masterton Trophy at the conclusion of the 2023-24 regular season and the top three vote-getters were designated as finalists.

Andersen started the season out hot with a 4-1-0 record but that was all taken away from him after team doctors found a blood clotting issue. Andersen would then miss 49 games over a four-month span from Nov. 4 to March 7. As he returned to the crease, he posted a 9-1-0 record, 1.30 goals-against average, .951 save percentage and three shutouts, helping the Hurricanes finish the season third in the NHL standings. He has now backstopped the team through the first round of the playoffs, defeating the New York Islanders.

Ingram almost retired a couple of years ago due to an undiagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and lingering depression. Ingram sought help from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program in 2021 and credits them with turning his career around. The 27-year-old was claimed off waivers by the Coyotes in 2022. He established himself as one of the Yotes’ top goaltenders this season, posting a 23-21-3 record, 2.91 goals-against average, .907 save percentage and a League-best six shutouts in 50 games played.

Kylington missed almost a year and a half with the Flames after an extended absence for mental-health reasons. Kylington worked with Flames’ support staff during is time away from the game and helped get him back on track. The 26-year-old returned to the Flames lineup in January and became a fixture on the blueline, registering three goals and eight points in 33 games while averaging 17:15 of ice time.
