Toronto Maple Leafs prospect and London Knights forward Easton Cowan has won the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Red Tilson Trophy as the league’s Most Outstanding Player as voted by accredited media.

Cowan was one of 15 nominees named last month for the award, other notable names included Seattle Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf, Colorado Avalanche prospect Cal Ritchie and 2024 top prospect Zayne Parekh.

Cowan spent the 2023-24 regular season with the Knights where he scored 34 goals and 62 assists for 96 points in 54 games. Cowan has added 14 points in 12 OHL Playoff contests as the Knights are currently in the Conference Finals where they are up 3-1 on the Memorial Cup hosts’ Saginaw Spirit.

Earlier this season, Cowan made Knights history by breaking the Knights record with points in 36 straight games. The previous record was held by Dave Gilmore, which was set in the 1993-94 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) season.

Past winners of the Red Tilson Trophy include New York Islanders prospect Matt Maggio, Dallas Stars forward Wyatt Johnston, Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner and Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid. Cowan becomes the first Knights player since Marner to win the trophy.

The 18-year-old was selected by the Leafs No. 28 overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. Cowan signed his three-year, entry-level contract last August. According to CapFriendly, Cowan’s contract has an average annual value of $935,833.

The Strathroy Ontario, product registered 20 goals and 33 assists for 53 points in 68 games during the 2022-23 campaign with the Knights. He added an additional nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 20 OHL Playoff contests. Cowan was named to the OHL’s 2022-23 Second All-Rookie Team.
