Carolina Hurricanes sign Calvin de Haan to one-year contract

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Calvin de Haan to a one-year contract, the club announced Saturday.

de Haan’s new one-way contract with Carolina carries an $850,000 National Hockey League cap hit. The 31-year-old defender had been attending Hurricanes training camp on a professional tryout.

The 6’1″ left-handed defender from Carp, Ontario previously spent the 2018–19 season with the Hurricanes before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he played from 2019 to 2022.

de Haan scored one goal and 14 points while averaging 18:31 in 74 games with Carolina in 2018–19. In the three seasons since, he’s amassed 24 points (six goals, 18 assists) and averaged 19:03 in 142 games.

Now signed through the end of the 2022–23 season, de Haan will look to carve out a role as a member of a Carolina defensive corps that also includes Jaccob Slavin, Brent Burns, Brady Skjei, Brett Pesce, Ethan Bear, Dylan Coghlan, and Jalen Chatfield.

Most recently, de Haan logged 18:57 on average and scored eight points (four goals, four assists) in 69 games with the Blackhawks in 2021–22. He now returns to the team he signed with as an unrestricted free agent after wrapping up a six-year tenure with the New York Islanders to begin his NHL career.
