Daily Faceoff Morning Report — 04/13/22
The Daily Faceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.
We will highlight injuries that will affect today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.
Gibson’s superhero effort not enough
The Anaheim Ducks were outshot 55-24 by the Florida Panthers as John Gibson (G) put on a clinic, making 52 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss. Gibson has a .905 SV% on the season, which is on par with his previous two seasons (.903 SV% and .904 SV%) after having consistently flirted with or above the .920 SV% mark in the five seasons before. Jonathan Huberdeau (LW) scored the overtime game-winning goal, his 105th point of the season (28G / 77A), to extend his point streak to 12 games (9G / 12A / 21PTS). Anthony Duclair (LW, RW) scored the other two goals for the Panthers to give him 30 goals in a season for the first time in his career.
Hintz wins it late
The Dallas Stars got two crucial points with a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Roope Hintz (C, LW) broke the deadlock, scoring the lone goal with under five minutes remaining in the third period. Scott Wedgewood (G) saved all 25 shots he faced for his fifth career shutout and improved to 3-0-1 with a .922 SV% as a Star. Tampa Bay has now lost five of their last six games (1-3-2).
Tkachuk, Flames rally past Kraken
The Calgary Flames trailed the Seattle Kraken 3-1 in the third period, but the Flames erupted with four third-period goals to give them a 5-3 win. Matthew Tkachuk (LW, RW) led the way, scoring a hat-trick to give him 37 goals on the season, a new career-high. Johnny Gaudreau (LW) had two assists to give him 101 points (34G / 67A) and crack the 100-point mark for the first time in his career. Gaudreau becomes the first Flames player to reach the mark since Theoren Fleury scored 100 points in the 1992-93 season. Gaudreau might not be the only player to reach the mark as Tkachuk has 92 points (37G / 55A) with nine games remaining. Jacob Markstrom (G) allowed three goals on 15 shots before being replaced by Dan Vladar (G) who saved all nine shots he faced and recorded the victory.
Sabres continue strong play against Maple Leafs
The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 and recorded their third straight win against the Maple Leafs, finishing their season series with a 3-1-0 advantage. Rasmus Dahlin (D) recorded two points (1G / 1A) to give him a new career-high with 46 points (10G / 36A). Erik Kallgren (G) allowed four goals on 27 shots and since starting his NHL career last month with a .963 SV% in his first three games (2-0-1), he has a .874 SV% in his seven games since (3-3-0). Auston Matthews (C) was held off the scoresheet, breaking his 16-game point streak (21G / 10A / 31PTS).
Islanders top Penguins 5-4 (SO)
The New York Islanders defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 to give them 27 points (13-5-1), most in the league since March 10th. Mathew Barzal (C) recorded an assist for the Islanders, snapping a four-game pointless skid, and has been very pedestrian of late. Barzal has only 12 points (2G / 10A) in his last 18 games after having recorded 29 (8G / 21A) in his previous 28. Rickard Rakell (LW, RW) continued to show off his playmaking abilities for the Penguins, recording two assists in the loss to give him five points (0G / 5A) in his last two games.
Kings come through in must-win game over Blackhawks
The Kings sit in third place in the Pacific Division and have some wiggle room, but after losing three straight games (0-3-0) and seeing the Golden Knights on their tail, every game must feel like a must-win. The Kings delivered the results under pressure on Tuesday, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2. Philip Danault (C) had two points (1G / 1A) for the Kings and now has seven points (1G / 6A) in his last seven games. The Kings hold a three-point lead over the closest non-playoff team, the Golden Knights, who have one game in hand.
Canucks get huge OT win over Golden Knights
The Vancouver Canucks desperately tried to hold on for a regulation win before Shea Theodore (D) scored the second of his two goals for the Vegas Golden Knights to tie the game at 4-4 with 42 seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime. Quinn Hughes (D) had two points (1G / 1A), including the overtime game-winner to give the Canucks some life in their playoff race. Elias Pettersson (C) recorded three points (1G / 2A) in the victory to continue his high-scoring ways of late, giving him 12 points (6G / 6A) in his last six games. Mark Stone (RW) played his first game since February 8th and was held pointless in 17:16 time on ice. The Canucks now sit six points out of a playoff spot, while the Golden Knights are three points out, both with a game in hand on the Los Angeles Kings.
Krug scores in return for Blues
Torey Krug (D) returned from injury and played his first game since March 22nd, recording two points (1G / 1A) for the St. Louis Blues in a 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins. Vladimir Tarasenko (RW) scored two goals for the Blues to give him nine points (5G / 4A) in his last six games. Jeremy Swayman (G) allowed four goals on 30 shots and has struggled mightily of late for the Bruins, posting a .850 SV% in his last four starts (1-3-0). Before that, Swayman was on an incredible run with an 11-1-1 record and .938 SV% in his 13 games. With the playoffs quickly approaching, the tides seem to be turning to Linus Ullmark (G) being the goalie of choice for the Bruins.
Capitals score nine in forgettable night for Flyers
All but two players on the Washington Capitals roster factored into the scoring on Tuesday in a 9-2 shellacking of the Philadelphia Flyers. Alex Ovechkin (LW) had two points (1G / 1A), extending his point streak to five games (4G / 3A / 7PTS). The Capitals are catching fire at the right time and have won four straight, outscoring their opponents 23 to 10, after having lost four of six (2-4-0) and being outscored 25-14.
Kreider hits 50 in loss to Hurricanes
Frederik Anderson (G) saved 28 of 30 shots as the Carolina Hurricanes held on to defeat the New York Rangers by a score of 4-2. Sebastian Aho (C) had three points (1G / 2A) for the Hurricanes and now has 14 points (7G / 7A) in his last 12 games. Chris Kreider (LW, RW) scored late for the Rangers to make the game interesting, which extended his point streak to four games (4G / 2A / 6PTS). Kreider became the third player to reach the 50-goal mark this season. Kreider had never topped more than 28 goals or 57 points in all of his previous nine seasons.
Wild beat-down Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers suffered their first regulation loss in eight games (6-1-1) at the hands of a commanding 5-1 victory by the Minnesota Wild. The Wild jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back, led by Kevin Fiala (LW, RW) and Ryan Hartman (C, RW), who both scored two goals. Hartman and Evander Kane (LW, RW) were involved in some extra-curricular activity in the third period that included both of them receiving game misconducts. Their scrum ended with Hartman giving Kane the middle finger as he was being escorted away by an official. It remains to be seen what kind of discipline, if any, Hartman will receive for his gesture.
Predators beat Sharks 1-0
Juuse Saros (G) saved all 25 shots he faced to record his fourth shutout of the season in a 1-0 overtime win for the Nashville Predators over the San Jose Sharks. Ryan Johansen (C) scored the overtime winner, giving him eight points (6G / 2A) in his last six games. The Predators received two crucial points to stay in the top Wild Card spot on a night where every team in the playoff race picked up points. Kaapo Kahkonen (G) saved 40 of 41 shots in the loss and falls to 0-3-1 in his Sharks career.
