Daily Faceoff Morning Report — 04/22/22
The Daily Faceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.
We will highlight injuries that will affect today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.
NHL Scoring Lead and the Race for 100
- Jonathan Huberdeau (LW) recorded two assists to move him back into a tie with Connor McDavid with 113 points (30G / 83A) for most in the league.
- Matthew Tkachuk (LW, RW) scored his 40th goal to become the eighth Calgary Flame in history, and second this season, to reach 100 points (40G / 60A).
- Kirill Kaprizov (LW, RW) had a three-point game (1G / 2A) to move up to 97 points (44G / 53A) on the season.
- Artemi Panarin (LW) had four points (0G / 4A) to give him 16 points (4G / 12A) in his last nine games.
Western Conference Playoff Race
The Vancouver Canucks kept things close until late in the third period but couldn’t hold on as they fell 6-3 to the Minnesota Wild. After winning six straight games to put themselves back in playoff contention, the Canucks have now lost two straight games (0-1-1) and are now at the mercy of teams ahead of them, hoping they falter for a chance to make the postseason.
The Los Angeles Kings have been blessed with one of the easiest schedules to end the season and have taken full advantage of it, winning their third straight game in a 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Jonathan Quick (G) started in his fifth consecutive game and only had to make 15 saves in the victory.
The Dallas Stars finished their final road trip of the season with a 4-2 loss to the Calgary Flames, having lost all three games (0-3-0) and being outscored 15-6. The Stars still control their own destiny but, because of the loss, so do the Vegas Golden Knights. The Knights trail the Stars by two points and both teams have four games left, including a potentially monumental game between the two teams in Dallas on Tuesday.
Around the League
- The Florida Panthers set a league record with a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, giving them the most goals scored in a single season during the salary cap era with 322 tallies.
- Steven Stamkos (C, RW) recorded three points (1G / 2A) in a crushing 8-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in a potential playoff preview. Stamkos is up to 956 career points (473G / 483PTS), passing Martin St. Louis’ 953 points for most in Tampa Bay Lightning franchise history.
- Jake Guentzel (LW, RW) scored three goals to give him 10 points (7G / 3A) in his last four games. Guentzel now has 40 goals for the second time in his career and increased his career-high point total to 81 points (40G / 41A).
- Casey DeSmith (G) saved a career-high 52 shots on Thursday against the Boston Bruins to record his third shutout of the season. There is a lot of concern regarding the health of Tristan Jarry with playoffs fast approaching, but DeSmith has been terrific of late, posting a .926 SV% along with three shutouts in his last 19 appearances (9-2-4).
- Andrew Copp (C, LW, RW) has fit in seamlessly since joining the New York Rangers and scored a natural hat-trick in a 6-3 win over the New York Islanders. Copp has 18 points (8G / 10A) in 15 games with the Rangers.
- Kevin Fiala (LW, RW) scored two goals, continuing his blistering pace with 16 points (9G / 7A) during an eight-game point streak.
- The line of Robert Thomas (C, RW), Pavel Buchnevich (LW, RW), and Vladimir Tarasenko (RW) continued their incredible stretch of play for the St. Louis Blues. Thomas scored a goal to extend his point streak to 15 games (8G / 19A / 27A). Buchnevich scored two points (1G / 1A) to extend his point streak to 12 games (8G / 14A / 22PTS). Tarasenko recorded an assist to extend his point streak to eight games (8G / 10A / 18PTS).
