McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Oct. 27 – Sergei Bobrovsky vs. Carter Hart
Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Thu. Oct. 27, 2022:
Why I like this matchup:
Sergei Bobrovsky is feeling the heat from his goalie partner, Spencer Knight. And Carter Hart has been one of the top goalies in the NHL so far this season.
What to watch for:
Bobrovsky is one of the most dynamic goaltenders in hockey, but that explosiveness and elasticity have gotten him into trouble on occasion. When he stays big and vertical in his stance, Bobrovsky finds shots easier and stays square to the shooter. His naturally hip flexibility can be a blessing and a curse. Bobrovsky can play long with his legs, reaching shots other goaltenders can’t get to. But that same flexibility can leave him low and spread, which exposes the top half of the net. Opponents have clued into this stylistic tendency.
Watching Hart has been a joy so far this season. His game has incredible structure. And I think Hart is just now reaching the point where he feels comfortable in an NHL crease. He knows the shooters and what to expect from opponents. And for the first time in his career, the Flyers are playing inspired hockey in front of him thanks to head coach John Tortorella. I’ve always thought Hart’s best route to NHL domination was through a relaxed approach that he’d yet to find. His personality is coming out through the media more and more. And that’s a good thing.
What fantasy owners should do:
Start both Hart and Bobrovsky. Florida should probably have an edge in tonight’s game: a win is probable for Bobrovsky. He’s faced a lot of shots but also given up a decent chunk of goals against. Hart has been a game-stealer for the Flyers. He hasn’t allowed more than two goals against so far this year.
Bottom line for Sergei Bobrovsky:
He has to start allowing less than three goals a game or else Spencer Knight is going to take over the Panthers crease.
Bottom line for Carter Hart:
Florida has a different look this season: namely Matthew Tkachuk. He’s going to be dealing with traffic and contact around the crease all night. Hart has to win the battle for sightlines.
