Nathan MacKinnon said he would sign another team-friendly contract
@Nathan MacKinnon owns arguably the biggest bargain of a contract in the NHL.
Signed to a six-year deal worth $6,300,000 annually back in 2016, the perennial Hart Trophy candidate is severely underpaid five years later. Despite that, MacKinnon says he has no issues with his contract and that he would sign another team-friendly deal with the Colorado Avalanche.
“I was just excited to get paid that much money at such a young age,” MacKinnon told Forbes. “Obviously it’s pretty (team) friendly now, but I was worth that at the time … I have no regrets.
“We have guys that we wouldn’t (otherwise) be able to bring in. On my next deal, I’ll take less again. Because I want to win with this group.”
The Avs have two more seasons left with MacKinnon’s current contract and then he’ll be eligible to hit the unrestricted free-agent market for the first time in his career. Before that happens, though, the Avs will need to sort out new deals for captain @Gabriel Landeskog and young defender @Cale Makar.
