With the 2024-25 NHL season nearing its halfway point, it’s a great time to take a closer look at how betting trends are shaping up. From moneyline and puck line performance to shifts in over/under results, there’s plenty of insights to uncover as we head into the second half of the season.

NHL Moneyline Betting Trends

This season, home-ice advantage is pretty much on par with where it landed last year, with home teams winning about 54% of the time. Road underdogs are having a better season compared to last year, and home underdogs are seeing some success too. In fact, home dogs have been slightly profitable overall.

NHL Puck Line Betting Trends

Not much has changed with puck line trends—it’s still a 60-40 split favoring the underdog (+1.5). The teams needing to win by two or more goals to cover the puck line aren’t doing as well as they did last season. On the flip side, teams like the Sharks and Ducks are crushing it against the puck line, while teams like the Rangers, Bruins, Oilers, Avalanche, and Predators have struggled.

NHL Over/Under Betting Trends

Betting on overs hasn’t been kind to bettors this season. To turn a profit, you’ll need a solid strategy since overs are hitting way less than the odds suggest. For example, games with a total of 6.5 goals are going under about 57% of the time this season compared to 53% last year. Meanwhile, sportsbooks are still pricing unders similarly to last season, which could create opportunities, especially since average scoring is at 6.1 goals per game right now.

Most and Least Profitable NHL Favorites

Even after losing as big home favorites to Anaheim on Thursday, the Winnipeg Jets are having a stellar season as favorites, winning 80% of their games and earning bettors nearly 10 units of profit. They’re 24-6 straight-up as moneyline favorites, edging out Vegas, which is 21-6. That said, the betting market had slightly higher expectations for the Golden Knights.

On the flip side, the New York Islanders take the crown as the least profitable moneyline favorites this season. They’ve won just six of 22 games as favorites, making them a nightmare for bettors. The New York Rangers have also been making their way into the red. San Jose, meanwhile, has been the underdog in all 41 games this season.

Most and Least Profitable NHL Underdogs

Underdogs are winning about 40.6% of the time this season, but Washington is in a league of its own. The Capitals have exceeded expectations, winning 14 of 21 games as underdogs, making them the most profitable underdog by a wide margin. No other team comes close—most trail at roughly half the profit.

Unfortunately for Nashville, it’s not just one of the worst moneyline favorites but also the least profitable underdog this season. The Predators have won just two of 15 games as underdogs, making them the most costly team to bet on overall. A bettor wagering one unit on every Nashville game would be down nearly 18 units this season—a brutal return.

Nashville might be the biggest disappointment overall, as it has struggled in every scenario, but New York State has been a money pit, as the Islanders, Rangers, and Sabres have been three of the four least profitable teams overall. In fact, not even the New Jersey Devils have been profitable, despite looking like a Stanley Cup contender.
