The 2025 Calder Trophy is still fully up for grabs

The race for Rookie of the Year honors continues to heat up.
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Carter Hutton and Tyler Yaremchuk discussed the three leading contenders for the Calder Trophy including San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini, Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson, and Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Celebrini is the runaway, odds-on favorite right now, with Lane Hutson in the middle, and Dustin Wolf at three. If you had to vote right now, how do you rank these three? Hutson has the offensive numbers and the defensive side of it. To do that as a rookie defenseman is very, very impressive.
Carter Hutton: I think this is one you just have to wait on. I think if you had to vote today, it’s going to be Celebrini. He is a true 18-year-old. What he has done, how dominant he has been start to finish, all over the ice, but I think you also have to take notice of where the Canadiens sit right now in the standings. They have a big game tonight against Ottawa and a chance to keep moving up the standings. But for him, if Montreal does get in the playoffs, and during this stretch I feel like every time I look at a box score it’s Hutson, Nick Suzuki, and Cole Caufield. I think it’s almost guaranteed they are going to get points and push this team over the top as long as Sam Montembeault continues to play as well as he has. I think that has to be the conversation now. You look at two teams on the perimeter. If they can get their teams in the playoffs, I think that’s when they start to inch ahead of Celebrini. And nothing against Celebrini in that sense, but if one of these two players goes on an absolute heater down the stretch and helps them get into that second wildcard, I think there would be a huge argument for them to be the Calder winner.
