The big rookie in the City of Brotherly Love is looking to take off after a breakout performance.

On Tuesday night, Philadelphia Flyers forward Matvei Michkov scored not once, but twice, against the Edmonton Oilers. They were the first two tallies of the young Russian’s career.

It was a welcoming sight for Michkov to get his first goal out of the way early, as he only had an assist against the Calgary Flames to his name over the first two games. It is not a secret how talented the 19-year-old is, which led to high expectations, and many preseason Calder Trophy predictions, before making his NHL debut after leaving the Kontinental Hockey League’s SKA St. Petersburg.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk looked at Michkov’s performance in Edmonton and what it could lead to.

Tyler Yaremchuk: His first career goal was a weird one, no one was sure it went in. I’m sure if you were to inject him with a little bit of truth serum, he would say, “Yeah, I kind of wish my first NHL goal would’ve been a one-timer from the circle.” You take them how you can get them, Michkov got the monkey off his back.

Frank Seravalli: It was also really anti-climactic. Not only did you have the, “Did the pick actually cross the goal line?” review…then there was the coach’s challenge, which then took even more time.

Michkov, he’s arrived. If you watched the first two games, you kind of saw…some nerves, nervous energy, turning the puck over, not really making confident plays. As that game moved on, you could see him adjust way more around the puck in Calgary, and then they get into Edmonton…this guy is the real deal. I truly believe his skill and everything else is off the charts, but what I like most about him is that he’s always competing.
