To put it bluntly, it’s been a terrible start to the 2024-25 season for the San Jose Sharks. The team lost last summer’s No. 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini in their regular-season opener, then went 0-7-2 through their first nine games of the season.
But on Monday night, the club won their first game of the year with a 5-4 comeback overtime win against Utah Hockey Club, capped off with an Alex Wennberg power-play goal just a minute into the extra frame.
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Sharks’ comeback win and what it means for the rebuilding group.
Tyler Yaremchuk: The last time the Sharks won a game in October was Oct. 27, 2022, meaning they were winless last year. They nearly did it again this year, but it was bang-bang-bang, with three goals in the final minutes against Utah, then the overtime winner that sealed their first win of the season. Let’s talk a little bit about that Sharks group getting off the schneid.
Frank Seravalli: I did not see this coming. I was laying in bed watching the score board, and it was 4-1 Utah. But the way it unfolded, I’m seeing these tweets come through my timeline while doomscrolling before I go to bed, and it’s like, “Sharks scored, oops Sharks scored again, what’s happening to Utah?”
Three goals in a minute and 50 seconds. Just unbelievable. Three goals in 110 seconds to force OT and get the winner. How about this Sharks team? After they became the first team in NHL history to open back-to-back seasons with no wins through their first nine games, head coach Ryan Warsofsky called it embarrassing.
It feels like the message was heard.
