Alex Edler will sign one-day contract and retire with the Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks have announced that longtime defenseman Alex Edler will sign a one-day contract with the club and retire as a member of the Canucks on Friday, Oct. 11 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
“I am humbled and honoured to officially end my career and retire as a member of the Vancouver Canucks,” said Edler. “I consider myself lucky to have started my career with such an outstanding organization, in this amazing city, with the best fans in the NHL. Finishing my NHL career where it all began is something very special for myself and my family.”

The 38-year-old was oringally selected by the Canucks No. 91 overall in the 2004 NHL Draft. Edler spent 15 of his 17-year NHL career with Vancouver, he played in 925 career games ranking fourth in franchise history and first amongst defensemen while racking up 99 goals and 310 assists for 409 points and 665 penalty minutes. Edler’s 409 points rank 12th among Canucks all-time skaters. Edler appeared in 82 career postseason contests with Vancouver, recording 38 points and was an integral part of the Canucks run to the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.
Edler last played in the NHL during the 2022-23 campaign with the Los Angeles Kings where he tallied 11 points in 64 games. The year prior he tallied 19 points in 41 games with the Kings.
Throughout his career, the Östersund, Sweden native appeared in over 1,030 NHL games racking up 438 points with the Canucks and Kings.
Internationally, Edler represented Sweden on multiple occasions including winning gold at the 2013 and 2017 IIHF World Championships and silver at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
