Alex Ovechkin’s 1,500th point further cements him as one of the greatest NHLers ever

The 38-year-old has five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in 23 games in 2023-24 and currently leads the Capitals in points. Last season, he registered 42 goals and 75 points and looks to replicate that this season.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Colby Cohen discuss Ovechkin’s milestones and where he stands among the greats.
Tyler Yaremchuk: A milestone night for The Great 8, as Alex Ovechkin hit the 1,500-point mark, becoming just the 16th player in NHL history to hit that milestone, and only the second active player to do so, the other being Sidney Crosby. Just joining this list cements him as one of the game’s best.
Colby Cohen: I was looking at the point totals, and a couple staggering things stood out to me. Ovechkin’s lack of assists — and I know he’s a goalscorer — but when it comes to the other players on the 1,500-point list, only two or three of them have less than 1,000 assists.
I think he’s going to get close to Joe Sakic, who finished with 1,641 points. Even with the slowed production, with the amount of games he’ll likely play, I think he gets close to where Sakic is on the list.
Tyler Yaremchuk: I would agree with you. Sakic sits ninth all-time in points, I think you can make the assumption that Crosby will pass the former Colorado Avalanche captain. That would mean Ovechkin would have to get past Sakic to get into the top-10 all-time scoring list.
