It’s a bit of a pay cut for Englund. He’s at the end of his two-year contract that he signed with the Los Angeles Kings in July 2023. That deal had an AAV of $1 million, the biggest cap hit of his NHL career.
Englund has been with the Predators for the last couple of months. He started the 2024-25 campaign with the Kings, but was placed on waivers in early February. The Predators picked up the 29-year-old, giving Englund more of an opprtunity to play in the big leagues.
After playing just 11 games with the Kings in the first half of the season, the Swedish blueliner appeared in 24 games with the Preds, averaging 14:36 of ice time. He only registered two assists with Nashville, giving him three points in 35 total games this year.
It was a bit of a step back for Englund. After playing in all 82 games last season with the Kings, he was a healthy scratch quite often in Los Angeles, including on several occasions with the Predators.
Englund has appeared in 197 games across seven NHL seasons. Originally taken by the Ottawa Senators in the second round, 40th overall, of the 2014 NHL Draft, he has made stops with the Sens, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks. Englund has scored a total of two goals and 18 assists for 20 points.
According to CapWages, the Predators have a total of 20 defenseman signed to NHL contracts through next season. The only blueliner currently rostered with the Preds who is set to be an unrestricted free agent is Marc Del Gaizo, who’s a Group 6 UFA.
