Are the New York Rangers in on Patrick Kane?
Frank Seravalli and former NHL player and current Chicago Blackhawks analyst Colby Cohen discussed on Daily Faceoff Live whether or not Patrick Kane could be on his way to the Big Apple.
Frank Seravalli: Let’s talk about the star of the game and the star of the last few games for the Chicago Blackhawks in Patrick Kane. You’ve had a front-row seat all season long, you’ve watched the ebbs and flows of Kane’s game this year and these last four games he’s put seven goals in the back of the net and he looks like the Showtime of seven years ago; what have you seen from Patrick Kane?
Colby Cohen: Look, he’s feeling it right now and I know a lot of people think he’s auditioning for other teams and I don’t really agree with that. I don’t think Kane gets in on the outside noise, I think he’s so intrinsically motivated that I think his circle and his camp is so small. But most importantly I think the biggest difference between this season and last season is who’s around him. I don’t think any player is going to put up 90-plus points with very little hockey IQ surrounding him at the offensive position. Right now, his line is clicking a bit and they’re setting him up and ultimately he’s feeling pretty confident. He’s on a run right now and I think he’s put this short hip injury thing to bed that everyone was talking about and I think that was completely overblown. He took a cross-check, his hip was sore and he sat out for a week like every other hockey (player) 50-plus games into the season. He’s on a run right now Frank and I think he’s going to continue it wherever he does end up.
Frank Seravalli: Yeah, Kane setting a Blackhawks franchise record with seven goals the most in a four-game span for anyone aged 34 and beyond. Pretty special run he’s been on. The wrinkle that’s been thrown into this in the last 24 hours is a report from Larry Brooks at the New York Post. When Larry says it, I believe it, he’s plugged in and as dialed in as anyone. He says that the New York Rangers are in on Patrick Kane. It would stand to reason with the sort of disappointment that Kane expressed 10 days ago with the Vladimir Tarasenko trade that Kane would obviously be interested in the Rangers as well.
I can tell you, that from my understanding there hasn’t been anything presented to the Blackhawks yet, not only has a team been presented, but they’re not sure any team will be presented. There hasn’t been any indication of that.
Here’s what I’ll say: if there is a fit, if Kane is heading to the Rangers, my guess is that if all sides come together and agree that’s where Kane should be heading, that there is a deal that could be worked out and done in relatively short order. The other teams that have been watching Kane closely, like the Edmonton Oilers, like the Dallas Stars who recently got a front-row seat, and the Vegas Golden Knights… it would make for a lot of disappointment.
