Auston Matthews Expects To Make His 2021-22 Debut On Monday
It looks like Auston Matthews’ pursuit of another Rocket Richard trophy will begin soon.
According to Jonas Siegel of The Athletic, Matthews said that he expects to make his 2021-22 season debut on Monday when the Toronto Maple Leafs host the New York Rangers.
Matthews played through the majority of the 2021 season with a wrist injury, making it all the more impressive that he led the league with 41 goals.
After the Leafs were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, Matthews and the Leafs decided it was best to give his wrist some time to heal rather than jumping right into having surgery. In August, Matthews began his on-ice preparation for the season and he decided his wrist didn’t feel right, so he underwent surgery to deal with the issue.
Matthews missed all of the Leafs’ preseason games and he’s missed the team’s first three games of the regular season. The Leafs currently own a 2-1-0 record without him and they’ve scored seven goals through those three games.
It’s safe to say getting Matthews back will help boost their offense.
