The Winnipeg Jets have signed forward Axel Jonsson-Fjällby to a two-year contract worth $775,000 per season.

The 25-year-old winger will return to the Jets after recording a career-high six goals and 14 points in 50 NHL games last year. Jonsson-Fjällby also had four points in as many AHL games with the Manitoba Moose in his first season with the franchise.

Jonsson-Fjällby was originally drafted 147th overall by the Washington Capitals in 2016. Jonsson-Fjällby spent his first three years in North America playing with the AHL’s Hershey Bears before eventually making his NHL Debut a year ago. Jonsson-Fjällby had four points in 23 regular season games with the Capitals, but it was his 34 points in 44 playoff games that really stood out.

The hard-working winger had a solid season in Winnipeg’s bottom-six, bringing energy and defensive responsibility to the team’s lineup. With a two-year deal, he’ll give the team an inexpensive option they can use whenever needed, and, potentially, he’ll stick with the team the whole way.

The Jets have $9.192 million in projected cap space. After signing Jonsson-Fjällby, the team has five RFAs of note: Morgan Barron, Rasmus Kupari, Gabriel Vilardi, Dylan Samberg and Logan Stanley. Declan Chisholm, an AHLer, is also a restricted free agent.
