The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenseman Beau Akey to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Akey was selected 56th overall by the Oilers in 2023, and quickly became one of the team’s top prospects. After an impressive showing during Edmonton’s prospect tournament run in Penticton, Akey was sent back to the OHL, where he already has three points in four games with Barrie.

Akey was a pillar on the Colts’ blueline last year, recording 11 goals and 47 points – a 31-point increase over his rookie campaign. It helped he played alongside Los Angeles Kings prospect Brandt Clarke, who made a name for himself as one of the best puck-moving defenders in recent OHL history. Clearly, being the main man in charge with Clarke in the AHL has been smooth sailing for the 6-foot-0 defender out of Waterloo, Ontario.

Akey is a speedy defenseman with good puckhandling and passing traits. While his offensive game has started to really show, he’s also strong enough in his own zone to be competent at the OHL level. Akey’s confidence was brimming during the Young Stars tournament, where he was easily one of the best players in the tournament, regardless of team.
