If you look at what Betano has up for the 2023/24 Stanley Cup odds, it’s all three teams from the Western Conference, Colorado and Vegas at 9:1 and Edmonton at 11:1. I am trying not to be a homer for the Oilers, but they lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champions two years in a row. Am I insane for thinking next year could be the Oilers’ year? 

Frank Seravalli: No, I saw a tweet this morning from Jack Michaels that really drove home the point; late in Game 5, the series tied at 2-2 Oilers and Golden Knights tied, Golden Knights win that game and go on to win the series. I saw some people saying congratulations to the Oilers on being this year’s runner-up. I don’t know if that’s totally accurate, even though I had the feeling whoever came out of the West was going to be in the prime position to win it.

I would’ve said before this playoffs ended, if you were to look at it and predict who would be the odds favourite for 2024, I would’ve said the Oilers, certainly ahead of the Avs. I like the pieces the Avs have, but they’ve got some holes, especially with Landeskog not playing next season. I wouldn’t have them in a prime position, and I think it’s hard for Vegas to repeat. If I were shaping the odds, I would have the Oilers at the very top, and if you’re looking for a bargain buy and long-shot bet to win, my money would be on the LA Kings. I also like the Minnesota Wild at 39:1; that’s a 100-plus point team that’s only going to get better as they weave through their cap hell.
