Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner tried to cut off Broberg, with the two entangling along the boards and falling to the ice. In the incident, Broberg’s right leg awkwardly bent as he hit the ice. The Swedish defender laid on the ice hurt for a few minutes before being helped on the ice by teammates and trainers.
The 23-year-old registered 10:17 of ice time across 12 shifts in the game.
Broberg has been a notable presence with the Blues’ D-corps since joining the team. In 12 games, he has scored two goals and seven assists for nine points, already the most points he has posted in a single NHL season in his young career. Broberg has averaged over 20 minutes a game with a plus/minus of +6.
Broberg came to the Blues this past offseason after Blues general manager Doug Armstrong made a big swing when he offer-sheeted Broberg and Dylan Holloway after finishing the last seasons of their latest contracts with the Edmonton Oilers. Both players signed the offers, with the Oilers choosing not to match. Broberg signed a two-year, $4,580,917 AAV, with Edmonton receiving a second-round pick in next year’s NHL Draft as compensation.
Broberg has never played a full season in the NHL, consistently going up and down between the Oilers and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. In 92 NHL appearances, he has scored four goals and 18 assists for 22 points, including playing in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games over the past three years, notching three points.
