Boston Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark leaves Friday’s game with upper-body injury
The Boston Bruins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3–2 in overtime on Friday afternoon, but they lost their starting goaltender in the process.
Linus Ullmark left Friday’s game early in the third period after an awkward collision involving multiple Bruins skaters in his crease.
The Bruins subsequently announced Ullmark suffered an upper-body injury on the play and would not return to the game.
Ullmark wasn’t the only Bruin to go down on Friday afternoon — forward Craig Smith also made an early exit with an upper-body injury, the club announced.
Before leaving the game, Ullmark stopped 28 of 30 shots to keep the Bruins within one goal of the Hurricanes. David Krejci scored his second of the game to tie it at two just over five minutes after Ullmark’s departure.
Jeremy Swayman replaced Ullmark between the pipes for the final 16:03 of regulation and the entire duration of overtime. David Pastrnak scored his 14th goal of the season to win the game at the 3:19 mark of the extra frame.
With the victory, the Bruins set a new National Hockey League record for the best home start to a season. The Bruins have won their first 12 games at TD Garden to begin the 2022–23 campaign.
Ullmark, 29, has a 13–1–0 record and a .935 save percentage in 16 appearances with the Bruins to start the 2022–23 regular season. The Lugnvik, Sweden product is in his second season with the Bruins after being signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Buffalo Sabres in July 2021.
In 174 career games with Buffalo and Boston over parts of eight NHL seasons, Ullmark has posted an 89–58–15 record, a .915 save percentage, and five shutouts. He’s under contract at a $5 million NHL cap hit through the end of the 2024–25 season.
