Bruins sign GM Don Sweeney to contract extension

The Boston Bruins have signed general manager Don Sweeney to a two-year contract extension through the 2027-28 NHL season, the club announced on Tuesday.
Having initially taken on the role in the 2015-16 season, Sweeney has helped lead the Bruins over the last 10 years, accumulating a record of 258-233-91 over 782 regular-season games while also making the Stanley Cup Playoffs in eight of the 10 seasons.
While the Bruins have hit high levels through his tenure, the consistency has stood out. With 1,007 points and a .644 point percentage over Sweeney’s tenure, the Bruins are tied for the NHL lead since he took the role.
In 2018-19, Sweeney won the NHL’s General Manager of the Year Award, having helped the team to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to the St. Louis Blues. Additionally, the 2022-23 season saw the Bruins amass 135 regular-season points, setting the NHL’s all-time record in that category.

— Boston Bruins (@NHLBruins) May 20, 2025Although the Bruins missed the postseason in their most recent campaign with a record of 33-39-10 and 76 points – their worst season since 2006-07 – Sweeney has already started the process to bring them back to contention, trading away several veterans, including Brad Marchand, Charlie Coyle, Trent Frederic, Justin Brazeau and Brandon Carlo.
Additionally, he served as Team Canada’s general manager for the 4 Nations Face-Off, putting together the eventual championship-winning team.
“Don has navigated a disappointing period for our club with conviction, purpose, and a clear vision toward the future of the Boston Bruins,” said Bruins President Cam Neely. “He made difficult decisions around the trade deadline with the confidence they will pay dividends as we craft a path back to contention.”
“The expectations in Boston have always been clear. It’s about winning championships.”
Sweeney’s offseason is headlined by finding a new permanent head coach for the Bruins. Joe Sacco finished the season as interim head coach, taking the role after the organization split with Jim Montgomery in November.
At the same time, the Bruins will look to add talent through the 2025 NHL Draft, where they hold the seventh overall pick, and in free agency as they look to re-tool into a Stanley Cup contender.
“It’s an honor to be part of a franchise with such a storied history and passionate fanbase. I fully understand and embrace the responsibility that comes with this role,” Sweeney said.
“Our fans have high expectations for this team, and so do I. The collective goal is to build a team that makes Bruins fans proud and ultimately brings another Stanley Cup back to Boston.”
In addition to leading the Bruins for another two seasons, Sweeney will head to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics as Team Canada’s assistant general manager.
