Sabres’ Olen Zellweger cleared to make Sabres debut against Blackhawks

Positive news for a talented team in the Eastern Conference.
When speaking to reporters on Friday, Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff announced that defenseman Olen Zellweger has been cleared to return to action. He will make his debut with his new team on Saturday, when the Sabres play host to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Zellweger hasn’t been part of the normal team practices for the past several days, as he’s been in concussion protocol. It led to him missing Buffalo’s first game of the season, which saw them drop a 6-3 decision to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 23-year-old was placed on injured reserve ahead of the team’s opener to make room for defender Dennis Gilbert.
There’s a lot of pomp and circumstance with Zellweger stepping onto the ice with the Sabres for the first time. The talented blueliner was acquired by Buffalo in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks in late June, with the Sabres then signing him to a three-year, $9.3 million contract extension on July 1. On a Buffalo squad that went through some changes over the summer after winning the Atlantic Division last season, bringing in a face like Zellweger maintained the organization’s legitimacy as a continued postseason contender.
Zellweger is coming off the best season of his young NHL career. In 76 games with Anaheim last year, he posted seven goals, along with career highs in assists (15) and points (22), helping the Ducks reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2018. He missed the first round against the Edmonton Oilers, but returned to post two points in three games against the Vegas Golden Knights.
In 164 regular-season games, the Calgary native has scored 16 goals and 35 assists for 51 points.
