Burnside, Houde named 2024 Hockey Hall of Fame Media Award recipients

On Friday, the Professional Hockey Writers Association and NHL Broadcasters’ Association announced the 2024 winners of the Hockey Hall of Fame Media Awards.

As announced by PWHA president and Daily Faceoff president of hockey content Frank Seravalli: Scott Burnside is the 2024 recipient of the Elmer Ferguson Award for excellence in hockey journalism. It has been awarded since 1984 “in recognition of distinguished members of the writing profession whose words have brought honor to journalism and to the game of hockey.”

Burnside’s illustrious career covering the NHL took off when he chronicled the Detroit Red Wings’ run to the Stanley Cup in 1997. Across close to three decades, he worked at The National Post, ESPN, The Athletic and even as a senior writer and columnist at Daily Faceoff.

“For more than two decades, Scott Burnside has been an agenda-setter in the hockey world,” Seravalli said in a release from the Hall of Fame. “His work is appointment reading. Burnside is a true big ‘J’ hockey journalist, someone who built relationships to take readers behind the scenes, someone who is unafraid to ruffle feathers by reporting on difficult topics or to offer a cutting opinion. Most importantly, he always remained true to himself, and gave back by mentoring countless young hockey writers along the way.”

As announced by Chuck Kaiton, president of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association: Pierre Houde is the 2024 recipient of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster. Houde has been the French language play-by-play voice of the Montreal Canadiens on RDS since 1989. His packed resume includes roughly 3,500 games, including the Stanley Cup Final, Olympics, World Championship, World Juniors and more.

“For over three decades, Pierre has brought francophone hockey fans all over Canada exciting and entertaining play-by-play of our great game with class and distinction,” Kaiton said in the release. “He is extremely worthy of being the 2024 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award recipient.”

Burnside and Houde will be designated as Media Honorees of the Hall of Fame rather than Honored members, the latter of whom are chosen by the Hall’s selection committee. They will be honored at the Hall of Fame’s NHL Media Awards luncheon in Toronto on Nov. 11.
