Flames sign Brennan Othmann to one-year contract

The Calgary Flames have agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with restricted free agent forward Brennan Othmann, the club announced on Friday.

Othmann, 23, will be paid a $975,000 salary for the time he spends in the NHL during the 2026-27 season. At this point in time, it’s unknown what his AHL salary will be.

The Flames previously acquired Othmann from the New York Rangers on March 6 in exchange for prospect Jacob Battaglia. The 6’0″ left wing appeared in two NHL games with the Flames to conclude the 2025-26 season, collecting a goal and an assist.

The Rangers originally selected Othmann in the first round (No. 16 overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft. The Pickering, Ont. product spent his junior career with the OHL’s Flint Firebirds and Peterborough Petes, as well as a brief stint with Olten EHC in the second-tier Swiss League, before joining the Rangers organization full-time in 2023.

Othmann quickly established himself as a consistent producer with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, collecting 41 goals and 85 points in 120 games over parts of three seasons with the Rangers’ top-level affiliate. However, that success never carried over into the NHL, with Othmann managing just three points (one goal, two assists) in 42 games on Broadway before being traded to Calgary.

The Flames announced their 2026 training camp roster on Wednesday, with Othmann listed as a member of Team Black despite not having an NHL contract at the time. Barring a strong showing in camp, Othmann will most likely return to the Wranglers, with whom he racked up seven points (one goal, six assists) in 14 AHL games in 2025-26.

Othmann was one of the final four RFAs left to be signed prior to the start of the 2026-27 season. He had been in strong company: Simon Edvinsson, Adam Fantilli, and Alexander Nikishin remain the final three holdouts as the regular season approaches.
