Calgary Flames defenseman Chris Tanev out with upper-body injury
The Calgary Flames will be without defenseman Chris Tanev for Tuesday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks as he recovers from an upper-body injury, the club confirmed on Twitter.
Tanev, 33, logged 19:29 and was a minus-3 in Monday’s 8–2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena. The Toronto, Ont. product has one goal and 13 points while averaging 20:10 in 61 games with the Flames this season.
Dennis Gilbert will draw into the Flames’ lineup to replace Tanev against the Ducks on Tuesday. Dan Vladar is expected to start for the Flames after replacing Jacob Markstrom for the third period against the Kings.
The Flames are currently four points outside of the Western Conference playoff picture, although the Winnipeg Jets could make that six if they hold on to defeat the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday. The Jets led the Coyotes by a 2–1 score after two periods at Canada Life Centre.
After their blowout loss in Los Angeles on Monday, the Flames fell to 4–4–2 in their last 10 games and 31–25–15 on the season. They currently rank 10th in the Western Conference and fifth in the Pacific Division.
Tanev is in the third season of the four-year, $4.5 million AAV deal he signed with the Flames as an unrestricted free agent in 2020. Widely regarded as one of the league’s top shutdown defensemen, Tanev has collected 171 points (31 goals, 140 assists) in 713 career games with the Flames and Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks originally signed Tanev as an undrafted free agent from the R.I.T. Tigers in 2010. Tanev spent the first 10 seasons of his NHL career in Vancouver, helping the Canucks reach the Stanley Cup Final as a rookie in 2011.
The Flames and Ducks will hit the ice at Honda Center in Anaheim at 8:00 p.m. MT on Tuesday evening.
