The Calgary Flames have placed forward Yegor Sharangovich on injured reserve, the club announced Monday morning.

Sharangovich, 26, is week-to-week with a lower-body injury after making an early exit from the Flames’ preseason finale against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.

It appeared Sharangovich suffered his injury with just over four minutes remaining in the third period of Calgary’s 3-2 loss to Winnipeg at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Chasing the puck along the boards, Sharangovich fell awkwardly while colliding with Jets forward Vladislav Namestnikov and gingerly made his way back to the Flames’ bench. He did not return for the final few minutes of the game.

Sharangovich’s injury means the Flames will start the 2024-25 regular season without their top goal-scorer from last year. After being acquired from the New Jersey Devils in June 2023, Sharangovich scored a team-leading 31 goals and tacked on 28 assists in 82 games with the Flames in 2023-24.

The Devils originally selected Sharangovich in the fifth round (No. 141 overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. The Minsk, Belarus product debuted with the Devils in the 2020-21 season and quickly found chemistry with top young center Jack Hughes, scoring 40 goals in 130 games over his first two NHL campaigns.

After a down year in 2022-23, the Devils traded Sharangovich and a 2023 third-round pick (Aydar Suniev) to the Flames in exchange for veteran winger Tyler Toffoli. While the Devils struggled to meet expectations (and eventually traded Toffoli at the deadline), Sharangovich thrived in Calgary and ultimately agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension carrying a $5.75 million cap hit.

Through 287 career NHL games over four seasons with the Devils and Flames, Sharangovich has collected 84 goals and 165 points. He also skated in three postseason contests with the Devils during the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Flames are scheduled to kick off their 2024-25 slate of games on Wednesday, October 9, when they take on the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena.
