Flames’ Rasmus Andersson played final 12 games of season with broken fibula

To say Rasmus Andersson was playing through pain would be an understatement.
As the Calgary Flames cleared out their lockers at the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign, the veteran defenseman confirmed to reporters that he played through the final 12 games of the season with a broken fibula, noting that the injury occurred from a blocked shot on March 25 against the Pacific Division rival Seattle Kraken.
“It took me about half [of those 12 games] to feel okay,” Andersson said. “The first half was awful, so I was kind of behind the 8 Ball to start. That didn’t feel too [good]. But the last game against Vegas, it felt good, but once we were out, me and [general manager Craig Conroy] talked and decided that I had been playing enough … It was just one of those things where it took me the first 30 minutes to get comfortable, and after that it felt better and better.”
Through 81 appearances with the Flames this season, the 28-year-old Swedish-born blue-liner finished with 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points to rank second in team scoring among defensemen behind only MacKenzie Weegar. Originally chosen 53rd overall by Calgary in the 2015 NHL Draft, Andersson has since completed part of nine seasons with the Flames in which he has compiled 47 goals and 184 assists for 231 points. Andersson has also added seven goals and seven assists for 14 points through 27 appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Per PuckPedia, the coming campaign will see Andersson enter the final season of a six-year pact that carries a $4.55-million annual average value. Andersson is eligible to sign an extension in July.
The Flames closed out the 2024-25 season with a 41-27-14 record and 96 points, missing out on the second wildcard seed in the Western Conference to the St. Louis Blues by a tie-breaker. The Flames last qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2022.
