Calgary Flames select Jacob Battaglia No. 62 overall in 2024 NHL Draft
On Saturday at The Sphere in Las Vegas, the Calgary Flames took Jacob Battaglia in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft, No. 62 overall.
Battaglia spent the 2023-24 season with the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and tallied 31 goals and 34 assists for 65 points in 67 games. He led the Frontenacs in goals and was second in points.
Battaglia had a rocky rookie season during the 2022-23 campaign that saw him tally just seven goals and 27 points. With his work ethic and relentless motor, Battaglia had himself a big bounce back year. The right-winger possesses elite puckhandling abilities that allow him to maneuver through the neutral zone and an NHL calibre release. Overall, Battaglia is a goal-scorer, but also showcased strong playmaking abilities throughout the OHL season.
The Mississauga, Ontario product is expected to return to the Frontenacs for the 2024-25 OHL season where he will see an increased role in minutes and substantial powerplay time.
Daily Faceoff prospect analyst Steven Ellis, rated Battaglia No. 64 overall.
“After a decent rookie season, Battaglia saw his offense bounce up to 31 goals and 65 points in 67 games with Kingston this year. A producer at all levels, he’s not huge at six-foot but he’s strong and creative. If he can carry his offense up to higher level, he could be a decent middle-six scoring threat.”
Battaglia joins Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin and Andrew Basha as the 2024 selections so far.
