Flames send Tyson Barrie to AHL on conditioning loan

The Calgary Flames announced Friday that veteran defenseman Tyson Barrie has been assigned to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers as part of a conditioning stint.

A healthy scratch for the Flames’ past 29 games, Barrie has been limited to nine appearances this season in which he has registered one goal and one assist with a minus-two rating and two penalty minutes. In all, Barrie has not played since a mid-November outing against the Pacific Division rival Vancouver Canucks, a contest in which he finished with one shot and a minus-one rating in just over 16 minutes of ice time en route to a 3-1 road loss.

Joining the Flames in September as part of professional tryout offer, Barrie put together a successful showing in training camp, ultimately landing a one-year contract that carries a $1.25-million annual average value, per PuckPedia.

A veteran of 818 career contests, the 33-year-old Victoria, B.C., native has seen stints with the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, and Flames, totaling 110 goals with 397 assists for 507 career points. Barrie has also added 21 points through 47 postseason appearances.

Originally chosen 64th overall by the Avalanche in the 2009 NHL Draft, Barrie finished with a career-high 59 points counting 14 goals and 45 assists through 78 games with Colorado in 2018-19. Skating with the Predators last season, Barrie notched 15 points through 41 outings.

In joining the Wranglers, it marks the first time that Barrie has skated in an AHL contest since a six-game showing with then Lake Erie Monsters during the 2013-14 campaign.

On the season, the Flames stand 23-16-7 to hold down the second wildcard position in the Western Conference with 53 points. Riding a two-game win streak, Calgary will look to make it three straight victories when the club returns to the ice Saturday to take on the Minnesota Wild.
