Calgary Flames sign defenseman Jake Bean to two-year contract
The Calgary Flames have signed defenseman Jake Bean to a two-year contract, Daily Faceoff hockey insider Frank Seravalli reported Monday morning.
Bean, 26, collected four goals and 13 points while averaging 16:19 of ice time in 72 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2023-24 regular season. The Blue Jackets opted not to tender Bean a qualifying offer on Sunday, making him an unrestricted free agent.
According to TSN’s Chris Johnston, Bean’s new contract with the Flames carries a $1.75 million annual cap hit. He’ll be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
Bean is the son of former Flames chief executive officer John Bean, who departed his role with the organization earlier this year. He is a Calgary product who spent his junior career with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen.
The Carolina Hurricanes originally selected Bean with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. The 6’1″, 196-pound left-handed defenseman made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes in the 2018-19 season.
Bean spent parts of two seasons in Carolina before being acquired by the Blue Jackets in 2021 in exchange for a second-round pick. He enjoyed his best year with Columbus in 2021-22, collecting seven goals and 25 points in 67 games while averaging 20:34 of ice time per night.
Through 197 career games over parts of five NHL seasons with the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets, Bean has collected 13 goals and 56 points. He added one goal in 11 games with Carolina in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Bean joins a Flames team that already has MacKenzie Weegar, Rasmus Andersson, Kevin Bahl, Daniil Miromanov, and Brayden Pachal on defense. Also on Monday, the Flames inked UFA forward Anthony Mantha to a one-year contract and re-signed forward Yegor Sharangovich to a five-year contract extension.
