On the first day of free agency Monday, the Calgary Flames announced they have signed forward Ryan Lomberg to a two-year contract.

The contract will carry a $2 million average annual value and kicks in for the 2024-25 season. Lomberg played his first 11 NHL games with the Flames from 2017 to 2019.

Lomberg is a gritty, two-way Stanley Cup champion winger. The 29-year-old played in eight playoff games for the Florida Panthers on their run to the first Stanley Cup in franchise history last season. Lomberg did not record a point, playing 7:20 per game and being inserted into the lineup for the crucial do-or-die Game 7 a week ago.

Lomberg has 50 points (28 goals, 22 assists) in 257 career regular-season games with the Flames and Florida Panthers. After being signed by Calgary as an undrafted free agent on March 19, 2017, he made his NHL debut and played seven games for the Flames in 2017-18. He played only 11 games over two seasons and did not score his first goal until 2020-21 when he played 34 games with the Panthers. He finished his first real NHL season with four points (two goals, two assists) in 34 games. Florida signed him as a free agent on Oct. 9, 2020.

After jumping up to 55 games the next season, the Richmond Hill, Ontario native had his career-best year in 2022-23 when he tallied 20 points (12 goals, eight assists) in a full 82 games for Florida.

Lomberg is not going to bring much offensive production. But he is one of the highest-energy forwards in the League, brings a ton to the dressing room wherever he plays and now carries the experience of winning a Stanley Cup to a Flames team that is trying to turn a rebuild into a long playoff push. Lomberg should help them steady things and stay competitive every night.
