Flames re-sign Sam Morton to one-year, two-way contract

The Calgary Flames have agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with restricted free agent forward Sam Morton, the club announced Wednesday morning.
Morton, 25, spent the majority of the 2024-25 season with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, collecting 20 goals and 45 points in 70 games. The 6’0″ center was held pointless in two playoff contests with the team.
Additionally, Morton skated in his first NHL game with the Flames in their 2024-25 season finale against the Los Angeles Kings, recording his first NHL goal while logging 12:25 of ice time.
Morton’s new contract with the Flames carries a $775,000 NHL cap hit.

A product of Lafayette, Colorado, Morton spent his junior career with the BCHL’s Wenatchee Wild before embarking upon his college career in the 2018-19 season.
After spending two largely unproductive seasons at Union College, Morton returned to Wenatchee to finish the 2019-20 campaign before transferring to Minnesota State University – Mankato.
Morton was allowed to remain at Mankato for one extra year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and truly made the most of it. He spent four seasons with the Mavericks and was named team captain for the 2023-24 campaign, in which he collected 24 goals and 34 points in 37 games.
In recognition of his stellar final collegiate season, Morton was named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award — awarded to the top player in NCAA DI men’s ice hockey. He also drew significant interest from NHL clubs, with the Flames winning out and signing him to an entry-level deal at age 24.
After his impressive performance with the Wranglers in 2024-25, as well as his impressive Flames debut, Morton is expected to compete with the likes of Justin Kirkland, Rory Kerins, and Clark Bishop for the Flames’ No. 4 center job in 2025-26. He’ll once again be a restricted free agent when his new contract expires.
