Calgary Flames trade Andrew Mangiapane to Washington Capitals for 2025 2nd
The Calgary Flames have traded winger Andrew Mangiapane to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, the Capitals announced Thursday evening.
Mangiapane, 28, collected 14 goals and 40 points in 75 games with the Flames during the 2023-24 regular season. The 5’10”, 184-pound left wing is entering the final year of his contract, which carries a $5.8 million cap hit, and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
The Flames originally selected Mangiapane in the sixth round (No. 166 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The Toronto, Ontario product appeared in 417 games over parts of seven seasons in Calgary, collecting 109 goals and 215 points; he added six goals and 12 points in 27 playoff contests with the Flames.
The draft pick the Flames received in the Mangiapane trade originally belonged to the Colorado Avalanche, who sent it to Washington in exchange for Lars Eller ahead of the 2023 trade deadline.
Mangiapane enjoyed his most successful season with the Flames in 2021-22, setting career highs with 35 goals and 55 points in 82 games before adding three goals and six points in 12 playoff contests. Following that season, the Flames re-signed Mangiapane to a three-year, $5.8 million AAV contract as a restricted free agent.
The Flames selected Mangiapane from the OHL’s Barrie Colts after his second year of draft eligibility. Mangiapane surpassed 100 points in his final two OHL campaigns before turning pro with the AHL’s Stockton Heat in the 2016-17 season.
After making his NHL debut in the 2017-18 season, Mangiapane established himself as a full-time player with the Flames down the stretch in 2018-19. He settled in as a mainstay on the team’s second line alongside Mikael Backlund and Michael Frolik (who was later replaced by Blake Coleman).
The Flames have now traded seven significant pieces of their roster over the last year: Tyler Toffoli, Nikita Zadorov, Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, Noah Hanifin, Jacob Markstrom, and Mangiapane. They also have Andrei Kuzmenko and Yegor Sharangovich entering the final years of their respective contracts.
With Colorado’s 2025 2nd now in their collection, the Flames have eight picks in next year’s draft in their possession: their own 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th, as well as New Jersey’s 1st, and Colorado’s 2nd.
