Canadiens’ David Reinbacher out 5-6 months following knee surgery
The Montreal Canadiens have announced that defenseman David Reinbacher has undergone successful surgery on his left knee and will be out for 5-6 months as per the recovery timeline.
Reinbacher left Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs after receiving an open ice hit. This was the same game that resulted in Patrik Laine having to be helped off the ice following a knee-on-knee incident with Maple Leafs forward Cedric Pare. Later in the game Habs’ enforcer Arber Xhekaj took matters into his own hands, manhandling Pare for his malicious hit on Laine.

Reinbacher spent the 2023-24 season in Switzerland’s National League with EHC Kloten where he tallied one goal and 11 points in 35 games. The rookie defenseman came over to North America at the conclusion of his season and dressed for the Canadiens’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Laval Rocket where he tallied five points in 11 games.
The 19-year-old was selected No. 5 overall by Montreal in the 2023 NHL Draft. Reinbacher spent his draft year with EHC Kloten, racking up three goals, 19 assists, and 22 points in 46 regular season games, along with a goal, an assist, and two points in three playoff games.
Internationally, Reinbacher has played for the Austrian international team at both the IIHF U20 World Juniors, where he had two assists in five games; and at the World Championship, where he had an assist in four games. Reinbacher also represented Austria this summer at the Olympic Games Qualifiers tallying two assists in three games.
Montreal will play its first game of the 2024-25 campaign on Wednesday, October 9 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
