Canadiens sign Kaiden Guhle to six-year, $33.3 million contract extension

The Montreal Canadiens announced Wednesday they had agreed to terms with defenseman Kaiden Guhle on a six-year, $33.3 million contract extension, which kicks in for the 2025-26 season.

The deal will pay the blueliner an average annual value (AAV) of $5.55 million.

Last season, Guhle scored six goals and 16 assists for 22 points and 56 penalty minutes, blocking 178 shots and averaging 20:51 of ice time in 70 regular-season games.

In two seasons, the 6-foot-3 has 10 goals and 30 assists for 40 points in 114 career regular-season games. Taking No. 16 overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Guhle had a fantastic junior career, helping both the Prince Albert Raiders and Edmonton Oil Kings win an Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL champions.

During his draft season, Guhle scored 11 goals and 29 assists for 40 points and 56 penalty minutes. During five WHL seasons, he scored 22 goals and 78 assists for 100 points in 181 regular-season games, as well as eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 42 Ed Chynoweth Playoff games.

Internationally, Guhle represented Canada at the 2021 World Junior Championships, helping them win silver. He also represented Canada in 2022, but the tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19. He most recently played for Canada at the 2024 World Championships, scoring a goal and four assists for five points.

Last season, the Canadiens went 30-36-16 with 76 points, the fifth-word record in the NHL, second last in the Eastern Conference and last in the Atlantic Division.
