The team from the U.S. capital looks to have a new No. 1 netminder.

During the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft at Sphere in Las Vegas, the Washington Capitals acquired goaltender Logan Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights. In return, the Golden Knights received a third-round pick in this year’s draft, as well as 2025 third-round selection.

The 2024 third-round pick originally belonged to the New York Islanders. It was acquired by the Capitals in the trade that sent Joel Edmundson to the Toronto Maple Leafs before the trade deadline. Next year’s third-round pick belonged to Washington.

Thompson has spent his entire NHL career with the Golden Knights. The former Brock Badger entered the pro ranks in the New Jersey Devils system in 2019. He eventually was signed by Vegas in the summer of 2020. He burst onto the big-league scene during the 2021-22 season, which saw Robin Lehner suffer a season-ending injury. He then split the 2022-23 campaign with Adin Hill, but was placed as the team’s No. 2 for the Golden Knights’ run to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup.

In 103 NHL appearances, Thompson is 95-56-32 with a 2.67 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage and four shutouts. He played in four of the team’s seven-game series against the Dallas Stars in the first round of this year’s playoffs, going 2-2 with a 2.35 GAA and .921 SV%.

This is not the first time the 27-year-old has been connected to the Captials. Thompson played the 2019-20 season with the South Carolina Stingrays, Washington’s ECHL affiliate.

Thompson is heading into the final year of his three-year deal that he signed in January 2022. It carries a cap hit of $766,667.

The move was necessary by the Capitals, as they were in need of a second NHL-caliber goaltender after sending Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings for Pierre-Luc Dubois.
