During Tuesday night’s game versus the Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin recorded goal No. 891, putting him just four goals away from making NHL history.

Ovechkin tallied his 38th goal of the 2024-25 campaign, he scored the goal on a redirect feed from Dylan Strome, beating Bruins netminder Jeremy Swayman.

Ovechkin has notched 38 goals and 26 assists for 64 points in 58 games this season.

Wayne Gretzky holds the all-time scoring record with 894 goals. Ovechkin sits at 889, so he needs just six in the next 11 games to break the record this season. Ovechkin missed time with an injury this season, but it hasn’t slowed him down. He’s on pace for over 40 goals, and would have likely broken 50 in a full campaign. The 39-year-old is playing some of his best hockey in recent memory, and the Capitals have been near the top of the NHL standings all season long as a result.

Ovechkin has racked up 891 goals and 723 assists for 1,614 points in 1,484 career NHL games. Ovechkin is second on the all-time goals list, as well as being 11th on the all-time points list. He has won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy nine times, scoring 50 or more goals on nine occasions and scoring a career-high 65 goals during the 2007-08 campaign.

Just last month, Ovechkin became the fourth player aged 39 or older to score 30 goals in a season.

The Capitals are currently first in the Metropolitan Division and are slated to face the  Carolina HurricanesChicago Blackhawks and New York Islanders in games this week and weekend.
