Despite many people believing the team was destined to take a downturn after narrowly making the playoffs last season, the Washington Capitals continue to prove the doubters wrong.

Following a 2-1 overtime win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night, the Capitals have been victorious in three straight games and seven of their last eight. Washington took over the top spot in the Metropolitan Division and the entire Eastern Conference.

One notable aspect of the win over the Blue Jackets is how they had to come back late to force the game into extra time. The resiliency of the Capitals is what has made this team so successful.

As of Friday, the Caps have a one-point lead on the New Jersey Devils.

During the Garbage Time segment on Friday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk played the clip of Capitals forward Dylan Strome appearing on Frankly Speaking, talking about the team’s ability to stay cool under pressure.

Dylan Strome: You know, we go into a game, and if we’re down 2-0, it’s like our team at this point right now is just very confident that we’re going to get three or four, and our goalies feel that, too. In Montreal, on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday, we’re down 2-1 in the third and [Logan] Thompson makes three breakaway saves in the first, like, seven minutes of the third…when a goalie does that, you just feel confident that he knows that we’re going to get two and then it just builds the confidence for us.

I think, personally, when a team’s scoring so much–power play’s rolling–it’s nice to be put into a position to succeed. When you get that opportunity, you got to try to make the most of it.
