Capitals’ goaltending will be a storyline to watch in 2024-25
The Washington Capitals are off to a 1-1-0 start to the season, winning their first game of the season 4-2 on Tuesday over the Vegas Golden Knights.
During the offseason, the Capitals dealt goaltender Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings for Pierre-Luc Dubois. This was shortly after Vegas dealt goaltender Logan Thompson to D.C. The Capitals have begun the 2024-25 season with a tandem of Thompson and Charlie Lindgren.
In 103 NHL appearances with Vegas, Thompson had put together a record of 95-56-32 with a 2.67 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage and four shutouts. Thompson is in the final year of his three-year deal that he signed in January 2022. It carries a cap hit of $766,667.
Today on Daily Faceoff Live, hosts Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk talk about why the Capitals’ goaltending will be a storyline to watch this season.
Frank Seravalli: There was a lot going on in last night’s game. It was the Logan Thompson revenge game against the Golden Knights. And I think Washington’s goaltending tandem is so fascinating because I could see either one of those guys running with the ball for a period of time. And it’s going to be interesting because they’re going to need to pay these guys at some point too. So that part is fascinating. Charlie Lindgren will need a contract extension. That has not begun. Talks have not begun on that yet.
Frank Seravalli: But just think back to the draft. Logan Thompson in the sphere signing autographs and it’s like, Oh wait, hold on a second. Logan Thompson, you’ve been traded. And he’s like on the concourse signing Golden Knight’s Jersey. He’s like, “Oh, I guess I just devalued these things” So he goes to Washington, and gets his first crack at his former team. It’s nice to see him pick up the win.
