Capitals place Jakob Chychrun on injured reserve with upper-body injury
The Washington Capitals have placed defenseman Jakob Chychrun on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.
While there is no specific timeline for return, this confirms that Chychrun will not be ready for either of the Capitals’ games over the weekend. The Caps don’t play again after that until Wednesday next week, so should his IR stint be backdropped to when he last played on Tuesday against the New York Rangers, he would be eligible for a return for Wednesday.
Chychrun suffered the injury early in the first period of Tuesday’s game against the Rangers after appearing to receive contact along the boards while chasing the puck, leaving the game after just two shifts in the game.
Chychrun was off to a solid start this season before going down with the injury, as he had 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points in 8 games. That put him on pace to tie his career high of 41 points, which he set twice in 2020-21 and 2023-24.
In response to Chychrun’s injury, the Capitals announced that defenseman Vinnie Iorio has been recalled from their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. Iorio has 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points in 9 regular season games with the Bears this season. He also played in 6 games at the NHL level for the Capitals last season, where he was held without a point in those games.
Chychrun is in the final year of a six-year contract with a $4.6 million cap hit, and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
The Caps will look to build off of back-to-back wins over the New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday at 5 p.m. EST. Washington currently sits in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a 7-2-0 record.
