Capitals sign Luke Philp and Spencer Smallman to one-year, two-way contracts

The Washington Capitals announced a pair of signings Tuesday morning, adding forwards Luke Philp and Spencer Smallman to one-year, two-way contracts.

Both deals are worth $775,000 in the NHL. Philp’s is worth $375,000 in the AHL, while Smallman’s is worth $350,000 in the minors.

The 28-year-old Philp had two goals and four assists for six points in 15 regular-season games with the Rockford IceHogs, the Chicago Blackahwks’ AHL affiliate, in 2023-24. He missed three quarters of the season with injury.

In 2022-23, he hit career highs as a professional, scoring 29 goals and 24 assists for 54 points in 60 regular-season games with the IceHogs.

Through his AHL career, Philp has sscored 79 goals and 72 assists for 151 points in 223 career AHL games with the IceHogs and Stockton Heat.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old Smallman had 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points in 53 games with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles, the Colorado Avalanche’s minor-league affiliate. The 6-foot-1 forward recorded a career-high 27 points in 2021-22, scoring 10 goals and 17 assists in 65 regular-season games with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves.

Smallman would add six points in 18 playoff games that spring to help them win the 2022 Calder Cup championship.

Drafted in the fifth round by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Smallman has 38 goals and 57 assists for 95 points in 244 career AHL games with the Eagles, Wolves and Charlotte Checkers.

The Capitals made a pair of big moves on the first day of NHL free agency, signing defenseman Matt Roy to a six-year, $34.5 million contract, then acquiring defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round pick.
