On Friday, the Carolina Hurricanes dealt Mikko Rantanen to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Logan Stankoven and two first-round picks.

Stankoven made his Carolina debut on Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets, scoring his first goal with the Canes. Mark Jankowski, another deadline addition by General Manager Eric Tulsky, also found the back of the net.

Today on Daily Faceoff Live, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss how the long-term future of Carolina looks bright.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Let me ask you about Mikko Rantanen’s other former team than Frank, the Carolina Hurricanes. same question. Hot or cold, are they better than they were on opening night?

Frank Seravalli: No, they’re not. I don’t think anyone in their right mind could argue that right at this exact juncture of their career Logan Stankoven is better than Marty Necas is. So, that’s really kind of the comparison. Now, in the long haul, I think they will be better. I think Stankoven has lots of room to grow an opportunity. He plays a style of game that fits what Carolina’s looking for.

Frank Seravalli: In the end, they weren’t gonna be keeping Marty Necas, so they traded a year and a half of Necas in the end for Logan Stankoven, who was under team control plus two first-round picks and two third-round picks. I think the long haul will be hugely beneficial for Carolina, but the fact that they went Necas, Rantanen and then Stankoven, I don’t know how you could argue that they’re better in the year now. But let’s take a step back and consider the way that they go about building their team and Eric Tulsky had a great quote, which I tweeted over the weekend about they want to be aggressive, they want to take risks. I give them full marks for taking those Rantanen risks, and in the end, they end up at a spot where the long haul will be better.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I think again, big picture-wise, they did the best that they could in all of this. They took a big swing and instead of sitting there and doubling down on it, said, okay, if he’s not gonna sign here, let’s go out and let’s try to get something for him in the something they got was very significant. So, yeah, I applaud them for the bold swing. Like it’s it’s smart business, I think, at every turn, they made good moves, it just maybe doesn’t help them win a Stanley Cup this year.
