With cap space and a great pipeline, the sky’s the limit for Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes fell short of their goal of winning the Stanley Cup once again in 2025, bowing out in the Eastern Conference Final against the Florida Panthers.
Carolina finished second place in the Metropolitan division before knocking out the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals in the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs in a transitional season after losing several key cogs in the summer prior.
On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and Insider and President of Hockey Content Frank Seravalli discussed what could be coming for a Carolina team with ample cap space and plenty of surplus assets in a pivotal offseason.
Tyler Yaremchuk: To our offseason preview which today is all about the team that’s probably best positioned to acquire a big fish on the free agent market. You look at this Carolina offseason preview board, Frank, 20 of 23 roster spots filled. Their only free agents of significance are Orlov, Burns, Roslovic… but they have $28.4 million in cap space. If Carolina wanted to just blow the doors off with an offer to, I’m not just saying Marner, but any free agent, they absolutely could.
Frank Seravalli: Any trade candidate really. Remember the Jake Guentzel trade from a year-plus ago? They didn’t give up any of their top five prospects. They still have them all. They’ve drafted almost as well as anyone. They’ve got a great pipeline and cap space, and by the way with their UFAs? All they have to do is snap their fingers and those guys would be back because they’ve engaged in some discussions with them preliminarily to at least understand or know what those numbers would be to keep them. They’re in a great spot. But when it comes to going after someone like Marner, I just don’t see it.
