Carolina Hurricanes sign Frederik Andersen to two-year deal
The Carolina Hurricanes have signed goaltender Frederik Andersen to a two-year deal worth $3.4 million per season.
Andersen is coming off an injury-impacted season that saw him go 21-11-1 in 34 games with the Hurricanes. A year ago, Andersen was a serious contender for the Vezina Trophy with a 35-14-3 record with four shutouts and a .922 save percentage, the best season of his career.
Andersen has a 282-125-52 record with 24 shutouts and a career save percentage of .915 save percentage with Anaheim, Toronto and Carolina.
The contract comes on the heels after the Hurricanes re-signed Antti Raanta for one year at $1.5 million. Raanta, 34, has spent the past two seasons with the Canes, going 34-8-7 with a 2.34 goals-against average, .911 save percentage and six shutouts as part of the three-headed goalie monster with Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov.
And with Kochetkov signed, the team is going back with the three-headed monster again. That’s $6.9 million in three goalies for next year, but the crease is definitely crowded. The Hurricanes have $13.923 million in cap space, with RFA Dylan Coghlan the only player left to sign. The Hurricanes have 13 forwards and five defensemen signed, giving them more or less a ready-made roster.
When healthy, Andersen is the No. 1, but all three goalies are capable of snagging wins. That’s a good position to be in.
