Hurricanes waive Ty Smith
The Carolina Hurricanes placed defenseman Ty Smith on waivers Saturday, per PuckPedia.
A frequent health scratch in 2024-25, Smith has been limited to eight appearances with the Hurricanes this season in which he has registered one goal and one assist for two points with a plus-one rating. The 24-year-old Lloydminster, Alta., native has also seen frequent trips to the minors where through 24 showings with the AHL affiliate Chicago Wolves he has notched 10 points counting three goals and seven assists with a plus-11 mark.
Saturday’s transaction marks the second time this season that Smith has been waived. After failing to make Carolina’s roster out of training camp, Smith was assigned to the Wolves after clearing waivers.
Smith spent the entirety of 2023-24 in the minors with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Pittsburgh Penguins‘ top farm club. With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Smith headlined the squad with 43 points counting nine goals and 34 assists coming in 63 games.
Originally chosen 17th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2018 NHL Draft, Smith’s career has totaled 131 contests counting stops with the Devils, Penguins, and Hurricanes in which he has recorded nine goals and 40 assists for 49 points alongside 52 penalty minutes. In 2020-21, Smith was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team after recording 23 points in 48 games with the Devils.
A dominant defenseman at the junior level, Smith spent part of five seasons with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs, underscored by the 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns when he received back-to-back Defenseman of the Year recognition. In all, Smith made 240 appearances with the Chiefs in which he amassed 45 goals and 190 assists for 235 points.
Per PuckPedia, Smith is on a one-year contract that carries a $775,000 annual average value and can become a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign.
