Blackhawks’ Teuvo Teravainen ties IIHF World Championship record with six assists in one game

Tuevo Teravainen made history in a dominant 9-1 win for Finland over Slovenia at the 2025 IIHF World Championships on Thursday.
The Chicago Blackhawks center put up six assists, tying a 52-year-old IIHF record for the most helpers in a single game.
He opened his high-scoring night with an assist on Mikko Lehtonen’s goal at the 7:26 mark of the first period to make it 2-0, before putting up his sixth assist on Seattle Kraken forward Eeli Tolvanen’s fourth goal of the game in the third period.
“Teuvo had a pretty good day; I don’t think he missed a pass today. You have to be ready at all times playing with him; he can make plays that others can’t even see,” Tolvanen said after the game. “[I] can’t remember the last time I scored four goals in a game. It was an important win, and a good game for our line and the team.”

— Steven Ellis (@SEllisHockey) May 15, 2025Unaware of the record and having lost count of his assists, Teravainen regretted not going for a seventh and record-breaking assist in the dying moments, saying there was an opportunity to add another to the already dominant victory.
“At one point there were four or five [assists],” he said. “Was that [Mikael] Seppälä at the back post? In any case, there was still time at the end.”
Ahead of the matchup against Slovenia, Finland had scored eight goals in three games, with wins against Switzerland and France and a loss to Sweden. Thursday’s domination allowed them to build confidence, heading into their final group games against Latvia, Canada, and Slovakia.
With a goal and an assist earlier in the tournament, Teravainen ended the day ranked second in tournament scoring, behind Boston Bruins and Czechia right winger David Pasternak, who has four goals and nine points in four games.
“Self-confidence is a big thing,” Teravainen added. “There was a relaxed and confident feel in our game today. We didn’t really give them many chances, but when there was something, Juuse [Saros] did his thing his goal.”
Sitting third in Group A on eight points, Finland returns to the ice on Saturday when they take on Latvia.
