Chicago Blackhawks trade Josiah Slavin to Anaheim Ducks for Hunter Drew

Not even one day after the Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenseman Nikita Zaitsev from the Ottawa Senators, they made a minor league deal trading Josiah Slavin to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Hunter Drew. 

Slavin, 24, is the younger brother of Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL Draft. The younger Slavin spent two seasons at Colorado College in the NCAA before turning pro. In 2021-22, Slavin made his NHL debut on Dec. 3, 2021, against the Washington Capitals and would play a  total of 15 games that season with the Blackhawks registering just one assist. He has spent most of his time in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Rockford IceHogs and last season he tallied 32 points (18 goals, 14 assists) in 49 games. This season, Slavin has registered 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 51 games. Slavin will report to the Ducks’ AHL affiliate the San Diego Gulls. 

Meanwhile, the Ducks are trading 2018 sixth-round selection Hunter Drew. Drew spent three seasons with the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) before turning pro. He totalled 92 points (24 goals, 68 assists) and 369 penalty minutes in 167 career QMHL games. 

The Kingston, Ontario product made his NHL Debut in 2021-22, playing in two games and picking up a fighting major after a scrap with San Jose Sharks tough guy Jonah Gadjovich. Drew primarily has spent his career in the AHL with the Gulls, last season the right-shot defenseman totalled 38 points (17 goals, 21 assists) and 134 penalty minutes in 64 games. This season, he has registered 11 points (five goals, six assists) and three fighting majors according to HockeyFights in 44 games. Drew will report to the AHL’s IceHogs; he is in the final year of his entry-level conract.
