The Chicago Blackhawks have dealt the rights to defenseman Victor Soderstrom to the Boston Bruins in exchange for fellow blue-liner Ryan Mast plus a seventh-round selection in an upcoming NHL Draft, reports The Athletic’s Scott Powers.

The Blackhawks previously acquired the rights to Soderstrom – a restricted free agent – from the Utah Mammoth ahead of the March trade deadline alongside forward prospect Aku Raty and the contract of Shea Weber in exchange for a fifth-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft. Of note, Weber remains under contract through the upcoming 2025-26 season at an average annual value just shy of $7.9 million, according to PuckPedia.

For Soderstrom, the 24-year-old Swedish-born rearguard spent the 2024-25 campaign with Brynas IF Gavle of the first-tier Swedish league where through 49 appearances he registered nine goals and 28 assists for 37 points coupled with 16 penalty minutes and a plus-28 rating. Soderstrom then added another eight points counting one goal and seven assists through 17 postseason appearances. For his efforts, Soderstrom was presented with the Salming Trophy as the Swedish Defenseman of the Year.

Originally chosen 11th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft by the former Arizona Coyotes, Soderstrom last skated in the NHL during the 2023-24 campaign where through three showings he finished with a minus-one mark while averaging more than 15 minutes of time on ice per game. In all, Soderstrom has seen 53 NHL appearances over part of four seasons in which he has collected one goal and 10 assists for 11 points. Soderstrom has also skated in 170 total appearances over four seasons in the AHL in which he has notched 16 goals and 66 assists for 82 points.

For Mast, the 22-year-old native of Bloomfield, Mich., joins the Blackhawks after being previously chosen by the Bruins in the sixth round of the 2021 NHL Draft. Through 37 appearances in 2024-25 with the Providence Bruins, Boston’s top minor-league affiliate, Mast recorded five points alongside 19 penalty minutes and a plus-seven rating.
